What is Sparo?

Sparo is a global brand with a vision to bring new materials, existing natural alternatives, and premium design to the global home décor and contemporary lifestyle space.

While Sparo is a new chapter, the experience and knowledge behind it come from over 15 years of research, development, and working with global brands. This journey has given us an understanding of materials, design, manufacturing, and the evolving needs of the global markets.

Sparo is our new journey towards bringing this experience directly to individual customers like you - creating contemporary products while staying connected to natural materials, craft, and the people behind them.

Why does Sparo exist? 

We exist for two reasons: the art and the artisans.

For us, the artisan comes first. Every product begins with a person - their skill, time, experience, and ability to transform a material into something useful and beautiful.

Today, more than 50 women artisans work with Sparo. We want to create a safe and meaningful livelihood alternative for women who otherwise have limited opportunities to participate in formal or organised work environments, and are subjected to unsafe work in industries like beedi rolling and firecracker manufacturing.

Our intention is not simply to create products, but to create an ecosystem where the people behind those products are valued as much as the products themselves.

Behind every basket, tray, planter, or other handmade object is a person who has spent time learning, practising, and perfecting the craft.

For us, working with artisans is not simply about sourcing handmade products. It is about creating opportunities for skilled women to earn, contribute to their families, build confidence, and find value in the work they do. 

For many women, personal responsibilities, social circumstances, and limited access to opportunities can make it difficult to participate in the formal workforce. Childcare can be a major barrier for new mothers, often forcing them to step away from work. At Sparo, our creche facilities help women continue working while caring for their young children.

Creating an ecosystem that supports our artisans:

Beyond employment, we provide support that helps women stay and grow at work:

• Creche facilities - helping new mothers continue working while caring for their young children.

• Free health check-ups - supporting their health and wellbeing.

• Daily stretches and yoga - encouraging movement and wellbeing during the workday.

• Knowledge and training programmes - creating opportunities to learn and develop new skills.

• Monthly competitions and prizes - keeping the workplace engaging and encouraging participation.

• Transportation support - providing travel to and from work and reducing the additional costs that can sometimes become a barrier to employment.

• Fair compensation and benefits -  our artisans receive salaries and other benefits that can amount to nearly twice what they may earn in alternative industries.

Ultimately, we want our artisans to see themselves not simply as workers, but as skilled contributors who can build greater financial independence, confidence, and self-esteem through their work.

What materials define Sparo?  

Our eyes and minds are always looking for something new - new materials, new possibilities, and new challenges.

We are particularly interested in exploring materials that already exist in nature but may often be overlooked, underused, or considered unwanted, and asking a simple question: What else can this become?

This curiosity allows us to experiment with natural alternative materials and translate them into contemporary products that can find a place in today's homes and lifestyles.

For us, the material is only the beginning. The real challenge is bringing together material, craft, functionality, and contemporary design in a way that feels relevant to the modern customer.  

What does a "Slow Good" mean for Sparo?  

There is an interesting contradiction in the idea of slow goods.

We live in a world where everything is expected to move faster - from discovering a product to ordering it, producing it, shipping it, and receiving it.

So perhaps "slow" does not mean asking our customers to wait, because we ship efficiently to our customers.

Instead, we would like our customers to take a slow moment to think about the many hands and human decisions behind what finally reaches their homes.

The artisan who works with the material. The people involved in preparing, finishing, checking, packing, and dispatching the product. The logistics teams who move it from one place to another.

A product may arrive at your doorstep in a matter of days, but its story began much earlier.

For us, slow goods is about taking a moment to recognise that story and the humans behind it.

What makes Sparo different? 

We believe our difference lies in the many small and large things we focus on every day.

It begins with the very first communication with you - understanding your needs, suggesting products that may work for your space, taking an extra effort where possible, and ensuring that the product you choose reaches you safely.

From material selection and preparation to treatment, quality checks and careful packing, every Sparo product makes its way from our hands to your home.

Quality is built into the process.

Behind the scenes, we place a strong emphasis on quality at every stage. Our drying process, for example, uses high-end machinery to ensure thorough cleaning and drying of the products before they move forward in the production process.

We work towards maintaining quality standards that meet the expectations of a global contemporary lifestyle market.

For us, quality is not something that begins at the point of sale. It is part of the process from the material and making stages all the way to the moment the product reaches your home.

Where is Sparo headed?

We are still discovering the next chapters of Sparo, but there are a few things we know we want to stay true to.

We want Sparo to be known for putting importance on its artisans while continuing to be a design-forward company.

Today, our artisan network is rooted in Tamil Nadu, and in the future, we are working towards a larger global scale.

We also want to take newer materials to a global audience - combining material exploration with contemporary design, quality, and top-notch professionalism.

The ambition is not simply to make more products. It is to explore what is possible when materials, craft, people, and design come together.

Where can you find Sparo? 

Today, Sparo has its own e-commerce platform, making our products accessible directly to individual customers.

We are also available through Brown Living as a trusted partner and will be avaialable soon on additional platforms, including Amazon and Walmart, among others.

But wherever you discover Sparo, we hope you look beyond the product itself.
